A four-year cycle of qualification, world championships and rankings — with results held centrally by the governing body.
Olympic sailing news follows a long, structured cycle rather than a weekly rhythm. Nation qualification, class world championships and continental events all feed into the same picture, and almost every authoritative number lives with World Sailing or the individual class associations.
This is an orientation guide. We do not republish results, standings or dates — use the official sources below for the current record.
Most places are won by a nation at designated qualifying regattas. The national federation then selects which sailors take the place, which is a separate news story in every country.
Fleet racing is scored across a series, with a final double-points medal race for the top boats. Standings before that race can be misleading.
World Sailing maintains the official world rankings per class. Third-party lists are snapshots and drift out of date quickly.
Entry lists, measurement rules and championship archives sit with each class association rather than with the Olympic organisers.
